Firefighters extinguished a blaze on April 2 inside a shop at 112 S. La Brea Ave., confining the flames to a second-story storage area in the building.

The fire was reported at 12:41 p.m. in a store named OVO on the east side of La Brea Avenue, south of 1st Street. Firefighters found heavy smoke emanating from the roof of the building upon arrival, Los Angeles Fire Department battalion chief Antoine McKnight said. One group of firefighters used ladders to access the roof of the building and cut a hole for ventilation, while a second group entered the building to locate the flames.
“There was a significant amount of smoke inside; no visibility at all,” McKnight said. “It was a small fire, but it was in a confined space upstairs that was being used for storage.”
Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 1:05 p.m. McKnight added that no injuries were reported. An employee who was inside the shop tried to use a fire extinguisher to stop the flames from spreading, but was forced to flee the building, he said.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation. McKnight said it appeared to be accidental. No estimate of damage or loss was available. McKnight added that the shop appeared to be in the process of opening.
According to multiple music-related websites, OVO is a temporary pop-up shop started by the rapper Drake. The shop was scheduled to open on April 4 and close at the end of the month. Drake’s OVO brand — which stands for October’s Very Own — specializes in clothing and accessories.
An employee of the neighboring Stussy clothing shop who only identified himself as Chris said some of the clothing inside his store sustained smoke damage.
“There was a lot of smoke,” he added. “There was definitely damage.”
