Loyola High School of Los Angeles is offering a summer school session from June 22 through July 24 for boys and girls entering the 6th through 12th grades in the fall.
The summer curriculum program is celebrating its 55th anniversary, and reinforces fundamental concepts while providing the skills necessary for academic success in multiple subject areas.
Additionally, Loyola’s summer session provides opportunities for participation and the development of co-curricular skills. The summer program combines academic study and physical activity with a relaxed social atmosphere. The goal is for participants to have an enjoyable learning experience.
“The big part of the summer program is that it’s an enriching educational experience,” said Rick Pedroarias, assistant principal and co-director of Loyola High School’s summer session. “We challenge students to think and grow, and also to enjoy themselves. It can serve as an introduction to the school. I am proud we are able to expose students to Loyola.”
More than 60 classes are offered during the five-week summer session. They include academic courses such as English, reading, public speaking, mathematics, science, history and language classes, as well as athletic activities such as baseball, basketball, flag football, golf, soccer, wrestling, track and field, weight training, swimming and water polo.
Additional courses focus on different types of photography, art, acting, sketch comedy, digital video, “CSI: Loyola” and the performing arts. Students can also receive instruction in playing musical instruments such as drums, piano and guitar, as well as music composition and theory. Participants preparing for college can receive training for ACT, SAT and PSAT testing.
Students receive academic credits, and most classes are worth 2.5 units (equivalent to a half semester of credit). Summer reading courses meet the Loyola summer reading requirement.
Students can enroll in up to five classes with periods from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. being the most popular. However, students attend classes from 7:10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on a daily basis. The cost for most courses is $465 per class. A nonrefundable $35 registration fee is included, and books are provided for most classes.
