Investigators recovered a dress from a restroom at the London West Hollywood hotel last Friday and are analyzing it to determine whether it is the same dress reported stolen on Feb. 25 from the room of actress Lupita Nyong’o.
Nyong’o wore a pearl-studded, Calvin Klein dress valued at $150,000 to the Academy Awards on Feb. 22. An assistant for Nyong’o called the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station at approximately 11:25 p.m. on Feb. 25 to report that the dress was missing. Police believe it was stolen from the actress’ room earlier that day between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said an anonymous individual called TMZ on Feb. 27 at approximately 3 p.m. and stated that the dress could be found in a restroom that is under renovation at the hotel. Representatives of TMZ then notified investigators in West Hollywood, who immediately went to the hotel.
“The detectives recovered a dress that greatly resembled the stolen dress,” Nishida said. “It is in the custody of the sheriff’s department. Detectives are continuing the investigation, and talking with any witnesses and talking with employees of the hotel.”
Nishida said detectives are searching for the caller, who could face burglary charges. She said it has not been released whether the caller was male or female, and added that few details are available because it is an ongoing investigation.
Nishida said the caller allegedly stated that the dress had been taken to an undisclosed location in the garment district in downtown Los Angeles, and it had been determined that the nearly 6,000 pearls affixed to the dress were fake. The pearls will be analyzed as part of the process to determine the authenticity of the dress found in the restroom.
Anyone with information about the theft is urged to contact Det. Richard Bowman, with the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, at (310)855-8850.
