Last Saturday, the Fairfax High School boys varsity basketball team, the Lions, ended the season with their second loss. The Lions faced off against their rivals, the Westchester Comets, and ultimately lost by a single point, 49-50, leaving the Lions 27-2.
The Comets ended the season respectively strong at 39th in the state, 318th nationally and in the No. 2 spot in city and section divisions, according to MaxPreps.com, a national high school sports website.
The Lions end-of-the-season rankings were still solid but dropped from the 15th to the 24th spot nationally, and from the 4th to 5th spot in the state. However, they still held on to the No. 1 spot in both city and section divisions.
The Lions are scheduled to compete in their first play-off game against the Gardena Panthers on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at Fairfax High School.
The Panthers ended the season 21-7 and 330th in the state. However, in city section they ended the season at the 11th spot and their section division at No. 1.
MaxPreps is predicting that the Lions will remain at the No. 1 spot in their section division and the Panthers will remain in the No. 1 spot in their section division.
