Police are searching for an unidentified African American suspect who shot a real estate developer twice in the face on Jan. 16 as the victim sat in his parked Rolls-Royce in a parking lot behind businesses in the 7500 block of Sunset Boulevard.

The victim, Kameron Segal, 48, remains hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

Det. Kevin Becker, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division, said he hopes Segal can provide police with information about the suspect, who witnesses said rode up to the vehicle on a bicycle at approximately 8:40 p.m. and shot Segal before riding away.

“It’s a whodunit at this point,” Becker said. “We don’t have any further information.”

Becker said police are looking at all possibilities, including that the shooting was a robbery or that the gunman specifically targeted Segal.

“We have no idea,” Becker added. “He was just sitting in his new Rolls Royce and a guy rode up and shot him.”

The detective said on Wednesday that Segal remained unconscious and unable to speak with detectives. Segal is not under guard at the hospital. Investigators are reviewing video surveillance in the area, and have very few leads.

The shooting occurred behind a building housing Segal’s business — William Holdings Inc. — near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Gardner Street.

A woman who answered the phone at William Holdings Inc. declined to give her name, but said everyone at the company was shocked by the shooting. She said Segal, who is originally from the United Kingdom, has been in the real estate business for 13 years and owns 19 buildings in Los Angeles. She added that he was leaving the office when he was shot, and was heading downtown to look at a building he was interested in purchasing. Segal was known for helping others, and the employee said she could not imagine why anyone would want to hurt him. William Holdings Inc. has initiated a $10,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction of the suspect, she added.

“He’s a very close friend and colleague, as is everyone who works with Kameron,” she said.

Becker said the only description police have is that the suspect was an African American man riding a 10-speed or racing bicycle. Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives with the LAPD Hollywood Division’s Major Assault Crimes Unit at (213)922-2927.
