The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum presents the first of two programs in the 6th annual “Linda and Tony Rubin Lectures” series on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Wilshire Boulevard Temple’s Erika J. Glazer Family Campus.

The free program is titled, “The Longest Hatred: Confronting the Rise of Antisemitism in Europe”, and the featured speaker will be Deborah Lipstadt, Dorot professor of modern Jewish and Holocaust studies at Emory University.

Antisemitism is the world’s most adaptable and resilient form of hatred, according to the museum. The Holocaust was the worst manifestation of it — but not the only one. Seventy years later, the resurgence of antisemitism in the countries where the Holocaust occurred has caused concern.

Drawing on recent news reports, research studies and interviews with European Jews, Lipstadt’s discussion will focus on the contemporary state of European antisemitism and what role communities and individuals can play. The lecture is presented in partnership with Wilshire Boulevard Temple and is part of the museum’s annual lecture series.

“These programs are of extreme importance in the ongoing discussion of antisemitism and what steps can be taken to educate and overcome such dangerous sentiment,” said Carol Stulberg, western regional director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. “Now in its sixth year, the lecture series continues to provide a forum in our community for discussion on a variety of important and timely topics.”

The second program in the series, titled “Just Following Orders? How Ordinary People Become Perpetrators,” will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Stephen S. Wise Temple, 15500 Stephen S. Wise Drive. Museum historian Edna Friedberg, Ph.D., will interview Christopher Browning, author and professor of history emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
