The National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles (NCJW/LA) is holding its annual “Clothing Giveaway” on Sunday, Dec. 7 from 8 a.m. to noon at the NCJW/LA council house on Fairfax Avenue.
In keeping with its mission of improving the quality of life for women, children and families, NCJW/LA invites at-risk members of the community to select from thousands of pieces of clothing and children’s books. Attendees will also receive information from local social service providers at a community resource fair.
NCJW/LA’s eight council thrift shops provided more than 5,000 people with 85,000 pieces of clothing at last year’s clothing giveaway. Many of the attendees learn about the event through local community service agencies, homeless shelters and battered women’s facilities. More than 200 volunteers donated their time last year, and additional volunteers are needed this year.
“When we see thousands of people of different ages, different backgrounds [and] speaking different languages, lined up around the block to come get their bag of clothing, we know we are meeting an important need in the community,” NCJW/LA board president Shelli Dodell said.
The event is sponsored by NBC4 Southern California, and weathercaster Fritz Coleman is scheduled to make a guest appearance. The clothing giveaway will be held in the parking lot of NCJW/LA council house, 543 N. Fairfax Ave. For information or to volunteer, call (323)852-8515, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
