A suspect wanted for murder in Oregon remains hospitalized locally in critical condition after being shot and wounded by police during an auto burglary investigation on Nov. 30 in Hollywood.
Authorities identified the suspect as Dirck White, 42, a resident of Clackamas County, near Portland, Ore. White allegedly fired at two officers who were responding to reports of an auto burglary in the 5400 block of Lemon Grove Ave., north of Melrose Avenue and east of Wilton Place.
When the officers arrived in the area at approximately 10 a.m., they observed a man matching the suspect’s description near Wilton Place and Lemon Grove Avenue. The officers confronted the suspect, and he allegedly ran southbound toward Melrose Avenue. One officer pursued the suspect on foot, while the other followed in a police car.
A taxi driver who was driving by saw the officer who was on foot, and gave the officer a ride for a short distance before the suspect was located hiding behind a parked car near Melrose Avenue. The officers ordered the suspect to surrender, and White pulled out a handgun and fired. The officers returned fire and struck the suspect. Neither of the officers were injured.
Police declined to disclose any further details about the officer-involved shooting because of an ongoing investigation, but said White was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to a hospital. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
“Obviously, we are happy to have this guy in custody,” Los Angeles Police Department Cmdr. Andrew Smith said. “It was a lucky break for them that they were able to take this guy into custody, and no officers were injured. This guy was obviously a bad hombre.”
The LAPD released few details about the crime in Oregon, but said White was wanted for the Feb. 6 murder of Clackamas County weighmaster Grady Waxenfelter. According to media reports, Waxenfelter was shot in the head by a suspect he pulled over on an Oregon highway for not having a license plate on his trailer. Weighmasters are pubic officials responsible for overseeing commercial vehicles with trailers in Oregon, according to reports.
Police and the U.S. Marshall’s service had been searching for White since the shooting in Oregon, and reports surfaced that he had been seen near Des Moines, Iowa. It was unknown how long White had been in the Los Angeles area.
In addition to the murder in Oregon, White was allegedly wanted for unlawful possession of a firearm. He also had an extensive criminal record in the Seattle area, according to reports.
Detectives with the LAPD’s Force Investigation Division are overseeing the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Authorities will determine later whether to file charges locally against White for attempted murder of a police officer.
A murder warrant had been issued in Oregon for White, and he will likely be extradited after facing potential criminal charges in Los Angeles.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the LAPD’s Force Investigation Division (310)486-5230.
