A seven-member delegation from Hungary recently visited Los Angeles and attended a breakfast reception at the Hancock Park home of attorney and Los Angeles County Commissioner Andrew Friedman. The delegation was led by Zoltan Balog, Hungarian minister of human capacity; and Katalin Novak, state secretary for family and youth services. Pictured at the reception are Hungarian state secretary Gergely Prohle (left); Rabbi Zvi B. Hollander, of Orthodox Union; Rabbi Yoel Gold, of Congregation Bais Naftoli; Rabbi Yuval Noff, of the Rabinical Council of America; Balog; Rabbi Pinchos Gruman, dean of Los Angeles Rabbis; Friedman; Consul Oliver Pinter; Novak; and Hungarian consul general in Los Angeles, Laszlo Kalman.
The delegation discussed Jewish-Hungarian heritage with the rabbis. Two-thirds of the 14 Hungarian Nobel Prize winners are of Jewish origin. Hungarian schools are required to teach about the Shoa, as well as Jewish cultural integration into mainstream Hungarian society.
“It is only through proper dialogue and extensive education of the youth that anti-Semitism can be eliminated,” Balog said.
