Salvation Army bell-ringers will be stationed in front of grocery stores, shopping malls and retail outlets throughout the holidays, seeking donations for the organization’s programs for the homeless and low-income individuals and families. In addition to the bell ringers, legendary vocalist Pat Boone performed for an audience gathered in front of the Market’s clock tower, and NHL Hall of Famer and L.A. King’s president of hockey operations Luc Robitaille received an award from the Salvation Army for the team’s support of the organization.
Major Kyle Smith, the Salvation Army’s general secretary for Southern California, said the goal this year is to raise $3 million locally, and $150 million nationwide. Television personality Lisa Guerrero hosted the event with Gary Bryan, of K-EARTH 101. Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge, 4th District, also attended, and members of the Salvation Army Children’s Choir from Torrance performed.
“This is one of the most important times of the year for us, and it’s an opportunity for the public to give to us to help those in need,” Smith said. “There are a lot of people in need in this community. We have more people coming to us than every before.”
