Revered former Washington Post editor Benjamin C. Bradlee died Tuesday of natural causes.
He presided over The Washington Post newsroom for 26 years and oversaw the newspaper when it worked on its famous Watergate coverage led by Bob Woodward and Carl Berstein. Bradlee was 93.
That reporting brought that political scandal to light, and ultimately led President Richard Nixon to resign, the only such resignation in United States history.
Washington Post officials said the newspaper’s circulation doubled while Bradlee was in charge of the newsroom, and their new coverage garnered 17 Pulitzer Prizes for reporting during his tenure.
“Ben Bradlee was a guiding light to all in our profession,” said Michael Villalpando, publisher of the Park Labrea News/Beverly Press.
