Police are searching for additional victims of an alleged sexual assault suspect who is accused of raping two women in his apartment in the 300 block of N. Sierra Bonita Ave.
The suspect, Kai Andrew Bannon, 33, was arrested at his apartment near Beverly Boulevard on Sept. 24. He has been charged with one count of forcible rape, one count of rape of an unconscious person and one count of sodomy, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Bannon pleaded not guilty to the charges and has been released on $300,000 bail pending a preliminary hearing on Oct. 9.
Det. Geoff Tavares, of the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Bureau Sexual Assault Detail, said one of the alleged sexual assaults occurred on an unspecified date in July, and the other incident dates back to February 2012. The detective could only provide a few details of the crimes because of the ongoing investigation and court proceedings, but said the suspect met the most recent victim through a friend, and the earlier victim via an online roommate wanted ad on Craigslist.
Tavares added that authorities are also investigating a third sexual assault case involving Bannon, but no charges have yet been filed. Bannon was also accused of rape in Massachusetts in 2010, and was later found not guilty during a trial.
“We are still in the process of finding other victims,” Tavares said. “You don’t get arrested for two crimes and have a third one in another state and not have other victims out there.”
The detective said Bannon is originally from Oregon, and has been living at the apartment on Sierra Bonita Avenue for seven or eight years.
Previously, there was insufficient evidence to charge Bannon with the 2012 sexual assault, but Tavares said authorities moved forward with that case based on information gathered through the current investigation.
He said authorities began focusing on Bannon in July after the most recent victim filed a police report. The incident in Massachusetts allegedly occurred while Bannon was on a trip.
“In situations where it is not a total stranger [who is accused of sexual assault], we want to build the best case we can,” Tavares said. “So in situations like this, we really have to take our time.”
Tavares said Bannon may have targeted other victims in their 20s and 30s.
Authorities released a photograph of Bannon, and are asking anyone with information to call detectives with the LAPD’s West Bureau Sexual Assault Detail at (213)473-0447. During weekends and off-hours, call the LAPD’s 24-hour hotline at (877)LAPD247.
