A man convicted of murdering two women and a 2-year-old child in the Miracle Mile in 2003 has been sentenced to life in prison, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Robin Kyu Cho, 55, was convicted of murdering 30-year-old Chi Hyon Song, her son, Hyun Woo, and their 56-year-old nanny, Eun Sik Min. Superior Court Judge Curtis Rappe sentenced Cho last Friday — more than two years after he was convicted.
“It was ridiculous that it took this long for sentencing,” said Det. Brian McCartin, of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Cold Case Homicide Special Section. “I’m surprised that it took this long.”
The suspect and the three victims resided in the same 150-unit apartment building on the eastside of Masselin Avenue, he said.
The victims were found shot to death, according to the district attorney’s office.
McCartin said it took several years for investigators to link Cho to the crimes because he had no criminal record. However, after Cho was arrested for a separate felony charge, a DNA sample was taken and uploaded to the LAPD’s system. Investigators soon found a match, McCartin said.
He said he believes Cho committed the murders for financial gain. McCartin said he has surmised that Min and the child may have been home when Cho entered the apartment — whether by knocking or following them in. He said he thinks Song entered the unit while the crime was taking place.
McCartin said the nanny and the child were found in the bathtub, while Song was tied up. Prosecutors said Cho was linked to the crimes through DNA evidence found on a latex glove that was stuck to packing tape placed on Song’s face.
Cho’s attorney did not respond to a request for comment by deadline.
