The Santa Monica Playhouse Education Conservatory has announced that enrollment is open for the fall session of its “Acting for Theatre: Play Building & Musical Theatre Workshops”, which begins in October.

Every child enrolled in the program receives a role written specifically for them, highlighting their strengths and challenging them to excel in all areas of theatre production, including performance and stage technique, teamwork, self-confidence, creative expression and communication. Students are taught projection and enunciation, reading and language comprehension, and theatre etiquette. The goal is to instill a love of and appreciation for theatre arts.

Applications are being accepted for the Youth Play Production class, for ages 7 to 12, which will be held in separate sessions on Thursday afternoons or Saturday mornings. Students can also apply for the Teen Performance Lab, for ages 12 to 17, which will be held in separate sessions on Thursday afternoons or Saturday mornings; and the special session for Early Stagers, ages 4 to 6, which will be held Saturday mornings. All classes meet weekly, with the first sessions beginning on Thursday, Oct. 2, and running through January.

The workshop is now in its 45th year, and allows students to expand their imagination and have fun as they act, sing, dance, play theatre games, improvise, work with costumes and make-up, and more. The students also collaborate with professional playwrights and directors to create a staged original production with music written specifically for the group.

“Every child performs, every child is featured, every child is challenged to be the best they can be,” playhouse director of education Serena Dolinsky said. “Young people explore all aspects of theatre, creating a true ensemble, where every young actor is an important part of the process. Students work together to create an original, full-length theatre piece they perform for family, friends and the public, at the end of each session.”
