A 23-year-old defendant from Los Angeles was found guilty of first-degree murder on July 17 for a homicide that occurred outside a nightclub in Hollywood on Jan. 13, 2013.

The defendant, Robert Earl Thomas, is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 2 for sentencing. He faces 50 years to life in prison.

Thomas was convicted of murdering Andre Lowe, 19, during a fight outside of the Empire Club at 1716 N. Cahuenga Blvd. Lowe and two friends were walking to their car in the club’s parking lot at approximately 2 a.m. when they were confronted by an individual who was later determined to be Thomas, and an undisclosed number of other individuals. According to court testimony, one of the individuals claimed to be a member of the Carver Park gang, and when someone in Lowe’s group said they were not involved in gangs, a fight ensued. During the fight, Thomas walked up to Lowe and shot him twice in the back head, prosecutors said. The defendant also ran the victim over as he fled the scene in a Porsche Cayenne, according to court testimony.

Police said after the shooting that the fight was part of a larger melee involving 40 to 50 men and women that occurred inside and in front of the club. The shooting was captured on videotape and the footage was later published online.

Authorities identified Thomas as the gunman, and he was arrested three days after the shooting in Las Vegas by members of the Las Vegas Metropolitan-FBI Fugitive Task Force. Jurors deliberated for less than a day before finding Thomas guilty of murder. He was also convicted on gang and gun violations, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
