A Beverly Hills dentist, who earlier this month pleaded to insurance fraud, has paid more than $780,000 in restitution and was sentenced to one year in county jail, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Grace Pak, of the Healthcare Fraud Division, said Tom K. Kalili, 59, pleaded no contest on April 10 to one felony count each of insurance fraud and failure to file income tax returns. Kalili also admitted to excessive taking allegations of more than $150,000.

Kalili paid $786,000 in restitution on April 29 at a hearing where Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Horwitz also sentenced him to five years of formal probation.

The defendant was arrested in May 2012 following a multi-year joint investigation by the California Department of Insurance, the California Dental Board and the California Franchise Tax Board. Kalili owned and operated Beverly Hills Medical Suites. The investigation revealed that the total loss to the insurance carriers was $439,000.

The defendant’s former office manager and biller, Claudia Ventura, 40, pleaded no contest on April 10 to two felony counts of insurance fraud.  Ventura is expected to be sentenced on July 11 to 180 days of county jail, 200 hours of community service and five years formal probation.
