An unidentified suspect was arrested on Tuesday after he smashed the windows of a marked Los Angeles Police Department patrol car parked on Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Hollywood and Highland complex.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 3 p.m., was caught on video by a KTLA news crew that was in the area. The suspect can be seen swinging two pipes or bats and breaking the squad car’s windows. A costumed Darth Vader character can be seen standing nearby, watching the incident.

Lt. Marc Reina, with the LAPD’s Hollywood Division, said the suspect reached inside the squad car and stole a laptop computer. He then walked a short distance and placed the computer on a wall, and attempted to use it.

“Some BID (Business Improvement District) officers confronted him and took him in to custody. Then LAPD officers arrived and arrested him,” Reina said.

The incident was also caught on surveillance camera footage from nearby businesses. All of the video footage, including KTLA’s recording, will be used as evidence, he said.

Reina said the suspect was booked for felony vandalism and felony burglary from a motor vehicle. He did not know what prompted the incident, or whether the suspect was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He said none of the costumed characters were involved, and the suspect had not been involved in any previous crimes.

The squad car was assigned to foot patrol officers on Hollywood Boulevard, and they had parked the vehicle in front of the Hollywood and Highland complex before heading out on foot. Reina said LAPD patrol cars are vandalized periodically, but the window-smashing incident took the vandalism to a new level.

“Usually it’s when they are parked on a side street for a situation where the officers go inside, someone will come by and key the vehicle,” Reina said. “To have something like this, where someone in broad daylight does something with all of those people around, it is very brazen.”
