Police shot and killed an unidentified suspect on Tuesday who allegedly robbed a victim in the 5900 block of Wilshire Boulevard in the early morning and was later traced to a neighborhood in South Los Angeles.
The armed robbery occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m., but police declined to release any further details because the incident is under investigation. Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman, officer Rosario Herrera, said detectives identified a suspect and located him at approximately 8 a.m. near the intersection of 62nd Street and Budlong Avenue, in South Los Angeles.
“Officers attempted to contact the suspect and he produced a firearm and barricaded himself inside a residence,” Herrera said. “S.W.A.T. officers arrived and approached the location. The suspect at some point exited the residence and pointed a handgun at the officers, and the officer-involved shooting occurred.”
Herrera said the shooting occurred at approximately noon, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office spokesman Ed Winter said the suspect was an African American man in his 50s, but his name was not publicly available as of Wednesday, pending notification of next of kin.
