A 24-year-old North Hollywood resident was arrested last Friday and charged with murder for the stabbing of a passenger on Jan. 13 on the Metro Red Line subway in East Hollywood.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:18 a.m. as the train was pulling in to the Santa Monica/Vermont subway station. Witnesses reported seeing a suspect walking between cars, singing loudly. When the suspect approached the victim — Jose Velazco-Alvarado, 34 — a brief altercation ensued. The suspect then pulled out a knife and stabbed Velazco-Alvarado in the neck.

The suspect exited the subway and fled on foot. Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau investigated the incident, and received an anonymous tip on Jan. 17 that led to the identification of the suspect, Angelo Correia. The incident had been recorded by surveillance cameras on the subway, which helped link the suspect to the crime, Sgt. Carmen Arballo said. She said a search warrant was served at a residence where Correia lives in North Hollywood last Friday at approximately 10 a.m., and the suspect was taken into custody. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

The homicide was the second to occur on the Metro Red Line since it opened in 1993.
