The developer of a project at the Columbia Square property at 6121 Sunset Blvd. has released images of the latest variation of the development, and has announced that construction has begun at the site.

The latest version calls for a 20-story residential tower that will serve as the project’s centerpiece, along with 675,000-square-feet of mixed-use creative office, residential and retail. The property has been vacant since 2007, when a previous owner announced plans to build a 28-story building on the property. The former developer received city approval, but the financing was never secured, and the property was later sold for $65 million in 2012 to the Kilroy Realty Corporation, the current owner and developer.

The site is the former home to CBS Radio and Television, which first opened on Sunset Boulevard in 1927. It formerly housed the studios for KCAL-TV, KNX and KCBS-FM.

The latest plan by the Kilroy Realty Corporation is scaled back from the plans that surfaced in 2007. The residences at Columbia Square will be a mix of long-term rentals, as well as furnished, extended-stay apartments. Each of the 200 luxury one- and two-bedroom units will be 700 to 1,400 square feet. Four individually designed penthouse units of up to 4,000 square feet will be created.

“We have assembled a world-class team to deliver a property that will offer best-in-class design, amenities and service, and arguably set the standard for urban living in Los Angeles,” Kilroy Realty executive vice president David Simon said in a statement. “Together, we are going to create a memorable Hollywood experience in a luxury hotel environment for both our permanent and extended stay residents.”

Kilroy Realty Corporation is working on the design with architect Bob Hale, of Los Angeles-based Rios Clementi Hale Studios.  Designer Kelly Wearstler is working on the design for the building’s common areas and furnished units.

The building’s roof will offer a pool, social club and workspace. Approximately 350,000 square feet of new office space, and 80,000 square feet of renovated office and studio space in existing buildings, will be created on the 4.7-acre site. Additionally, 20,000 square feet of retail space will front Sunset Boulevard. Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2016.
