The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has announced that the arraignments have been continued for two Los Angeles Police Department officers charged in separate workers’ compensation fraud cases.
Officer John Hall was ordered to return to the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, Department 30, on Feb. 10 for arraignment, said Deputy District Attorney Arunas Sodonis, with the Healthcare Fraud Division. He was released earlier on $80,000 bail.
Hall was charged in December with two counts of insurance fraud, one count of attempted perjury under oath and one count of grand theft of personal property. The 19-year LAPD veteran claimed he injured his back while on duty and was placed on leave. On multiple occasions in 2013 while on paid leave, Hall allegedly was observed on a boat helping to carry heavy diving equipment and providing scuba diving instructions to an undercover police officer, according to the district attorney’s office.
The second defendant, Officer Ralph Mendoza, was ordered to return to the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, Department 30, on Jan. 21 for arraignment, Sodonis said. He was released on $40,000 bail.
Mendoza, a 13-year LAPD veteran, was charged in December with one count of insurance fraud and one count of grand theft of personal property. Mendoza allegedly altered a doctor’s return to work slip in June 2012.
If convicted, Hall faces a sentence of up to eight years in county jail. Mendoza faces a sentence of up to six years in county jail.
