The creator of the world’s first indoor trampoline park is coming off an “absolutely phenomenal” Sky Zone 2013 Ultimate Dodgeball Championship, and the business is preparing for its busy winter season, said Rick Platt, who operates SkyZone Franchise Group.
The Hancock Park resident said 452 teams participated in the tournament that began in August, compared to 111 teams last year. Fox Sports Network filmed the event, and episodes will begin airing Nov. 14.
“It was really a wonderful thing all the way around,” Platt said.
With $50,000 in prize money at stake, teams from all over the country competed in regional qualifiers, which were followed by an eight-team single-elimination playoff. The winner received a chance to take on Xtreme Couture, an organization owned by UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, in a charity match.
“Of course, our guys beat the pro fighters, which was nice,” Platt said. “It was fun, cool, competitive. It just went great.”
The winning team had already secured $20,000 in prize money, but the win against Xtreme Couture offered its members another $10,000 to assist the charity of their choice. The victors opted to benefit the 3-year-old nephew of a competitor on an Indianapolis team who has an acute kidney disease, Platt said.
While Sky Zone officials are pleased with how the tournament turned out, they’re also looking forward to a good winter season. Although school is in session, patrons flock to Sky Zone locations during the dreary winter months, Platt said.
“It’s fun fitness,” he said. “The workout is as dynamic and efficient as any in the world, and it’s also a blast.”
Platt said Sky Zone is very proud of being the perfect blend of entertainment and exercise. He cited the story of an obese Minneapolis woman who lost 100 pounds after frequenting the Minnesota facility for one year.
The beauty of Sky Zone is that anyone can do it and that it caters to all shapes and sizes, Platt said. He said the company is slated to hit 5 million jumpers this year.
“We continue to really grow,” Platt said, adding that Sky Zone has sold more than 130 franchises, and locations are expected to open in Australia and Mexico this year. “It has really exploded.”
Locally, Sky Zone has locations in Torrance, 1625 W. 190th St., and Van Nuys, 7741 Hayvenhurst Ave. www.skyzone.com.
