A second suspect has been arrested for the May 31 assault of a transgender woman in Hollywood.

The suspect, identified as Samuel Garunts, 21, of Hollywood, was taken into custody on Oct. 23. He was booked on one count of felony assault. Another suspect, Nicol Shakhnazaryan, 21, was arrested on June 20 after police received an anonymous tip that he was involved in the assault.

Det. Mike Morris, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division, declined to comment on how Garunts was identified as a suspect or where he was arrested. He said investigators are confident, however, that Shakhnazaryan and Garunts were the two primary suspects involved in the crime.

“There were four people in the group, but these are the two really involved in the actual attack,” Morris said. “They are friends. They were actually celebrating [Garunts’] twenty-first birthday.”

Morris said police had identified one of the remaining two suspects from the group, and added that charges wouldn’t likely be filed against him because he didn’t play an active role in the crime. They are still trying to identify the fourth man in the group.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. near the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. The suspects allegedly approached the victim, Vivian Diego, and an argument ensued. When Diego walked away, one of the suspects ran up from behind and struck the victim in the back of the head. After the victim fell to the ground, she was struck and kicked multiple times. Diego was hospitalized for a week suffering from broken bones and internal injuries.

Shakhnazaryan has pleaded not guilty to one felony count of battery causing great bodily injury, and one count of felony assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury. He remains free pending his next court appearance on Nov. 6. Garunts posted $50,000 bail following his arrest, and is scheduled to appear for an arraignment on Nov. 18.

Investigators reviewed surveillance camera footage of the attack, and determined it occurred because of the argument, as opposed to being a hate crime, Morris said.
