The dynamic songwriting duo of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller are iconic names in the music industry. They have been churning out hits since the 1950s, including “Hound Dog”, “Kansas City”, “Poison Ivy” “On Broadway”, “Yakety Yak”, “I Am Woman” among countless others. These songs and many others by Leiber and Stoller were compilied into a hit Broadway musical revue that originally debuted in Los Angeles in 1994, and then on Broadway in 1995. The hit show returns to the Pasadena Playhouse for a run though October 13, and it’s a show you don’t want to miss.
The sultry voices of Kyra Little Da Costa, Adrianna Rose Lyons, Carly Thomas Smith and Monique L. Midgette grace the stage, perform tunes ranging from soul, jazz, rock and even country.
But the ladies aren’t the only ones spicing up the stage. Gentlemen LaVance Colley, Michael Shepperd, Stu James and Thomas Hobson liven up the stage with their “Four Tops” style dancing and harmonizing, engaging the audience and getting them off their feet. Quick costume changes, outstanding live orchestra and minimalist yet attractive set design make this show about the more than 40 songs of Leiber and Stoller the cast performs.
Stop in at the relocated Red White and Bluezz restaurant and bar next door to the charming theatre before the show for dinner and make a grand evening of it. Smokey Joe’s Café is toe tapping good fun – so don’t be afraid to be the first in the audience to get up and dance!
