The eclectic mix of antique bottles, unique lamps and chandeliers, luxurious and industrial style seating, and collectibles from all over the world, embody the personality of Devall of Devall Design Home.
As a self-proclaimed builder – not just a designer– Devall has successfully opened a comfortable marketplace where shoppers and decorators can relax while browsing the store’s collection of fixtures and furnishings.
A Detroit native who came to Los Angeles 15 years ago after stints in New York and New Jersey, Devall specializes in improving living spaces for homeowners. Her shop on Larchmont is an extension of her years of experience in the interior design business.
“This area didn’t have anything like this. I didn’t want to be in the main furniture district; I wanted to set myself apart and create more of a marketplace, a hidden treasure, which is what I think Larchmont is,” Devall said. “I do a lot of work in Hancock Park, so I was familiar with the area, and I fell in love with the building.”
A signature tag line in many of Devall’s ads is “shop differently,” which is quite apropos. One can’t help but notice the elephant in the room — a floor-to-ceiling wallpaper image of a pachyderm that dominates the space.
Devall said photographic wallpapers are part of her design repertoire, and can be customized to the client’s tastes. She also creates all types of fixtures and furniture — from luxurious chairs and living room sets, armoires and cabinets, to tables, lamps and sinks constructed from refurbished and recycled materials. With jobs ranging from simple interior re-arrangements to comprehensive home renovations, she works with her own team of contractors and carpenters, and gets her hands dirty, so to speak, herself.
Devall had envisioned a shop like this for years, but didn’t have the impetus for actually opening. She learned her knack of choosing unusual and extraordinary items when she traveled the world and did a lot of buying. When life threw her a curveball, she found that motivation to open the store – and she hit it out of the park.
At Devall Design Home, savvy shoppers will find cups from Berlin by the German company Kuhn Ceramics. She is the only designer in the United States to carry the line. Alternatively, products from the Swedish skin care line, L:A Bruket, adorn one of the armoires in the store, mixing hard and soft goods.
She also carries pieces by aspiring and established artists, such as wall hangings by photographer Emilia Sparagna.
“I can give [my clients] a really nice, high-end look and fresh approach with nothing that is going to be unlivable and intimidating,” she said. “I have a builder’s sensibility. I have a very strong mechanical sense of what it takes to build and put together pieces, and I have a keen sense of spatial relationships. I’m not just a furniture salesperson. I am really trying to help them realize what it is that they are trying to create in their homes.”
Devall Design Home is celebrating its first anniversary on Larchmont in October. The event is sure to reflect Devall’s sense of style, where guests will feel comfortable and at home.
