A suspect who has been dubbed the “Asian Wig Bandit” is being sought by investigators from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Division, Robbery Special Section. A reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
The suspect is responsible for 19 robberies — including four in Koreatown — since last December. The suspect walks into businesses disguised as a woman, approaches employees and pulls out a handgun. He then orders them to lie on the ground, and demands money and jewelry.
The “Asian Wig Bandit” primarily targets companies that specialize in money transfers to the Philippines. The robberies have occurred in the cities of Los Angeles, Glendale, West Covina, Rancho Cucamonga and Chula Vista. The incidents in Koreatown occurred on Dec. 19 in the 600 block of N. Vermont Ave.; March 28 in the 200 block of S. Vermont Ave.; April 4 in the 200 block of S. Vermont Ave.; and May 6 in the 3400 block of Wilshire Blvd. In addition to being armed with a handgun, the suspect has used a Taser on one victim. He allegedly wears a wig and sunglasses. Investigators said the suspect has also been seen in the San Jose area near the same type of businesses.
The city of Los Angeles is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the suspect, who is described as an Asian man, 25-30 years old, 5 feet 9 inches tall and approximately 160 to 180 pounds. He wears a blond or black shoulder-length wig, and has been seen driving a beige or light-colored BMW SUV, possibly an X5.
