A 20-year-old suspected drunk driver allegedly caused a chain-reaction collision on La Cienega Boulevard late last Saturday that left one pedestrian dead and three other critically injured.
The driver, Leonel Rivera, 20, was driving northbound on La Cienega Boulevard at approximately 11:30 p.m. when he lost control of his 1991 Ford Mustang and crashed into a BMW traveling in the same direction. The BMW’s driver lost control and struck a Toyota Scion, which careened on to the sidewalk near the intersection of La Cienega Boulevard and Cashio Street and struck four pedestrians, according to inspector Deborah Cole, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Traffic Division. One of the victims, who was identified as David Lee Monday, 61, was pronounced dead at the scene. The critically injured victims were treated at separate hospitals, and are expected to survive. None of the drivers suffered significant injuries.
Rivera fled the scene on foot, but was located by officers a short time later and taken into custody. He was booked for suspicion of driving under the influence and felony vehicular manslaughter. The driver’s blood alcohol level was not disclosed. Cole said speeding and intoxication were factors in the collision.
“It’s unfortunate,” she said. “The decedent was just sitting on a pillar. He was just in the area.”
None of the injured victims were identified. Rivera was released on $100,000 bail.
Cole said drivers frequently speed on the stretch of La Cienega Boulevard where the collision occurred, south of Olympic Boulevard. The posted speed limit is 35 mph, and officers routinely cite drivers for excessive speed on the thoroughfare.
Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Jane Robison said formal charges have not yet been filed, pending the outcome of the investigation.
