Two reputed gang members were charged on June 13 with murder and attempted murder, and a third defendant was charged with being an accessory to murder, in connection with a shooting last week near Santa Monica College.
Christopher Chonan Osumi, 19; Meliton Lorenzo Lopez, 23; and Noah Jason Farris, 32, have been charged in the shooting, which occurred at approximately 8:15 a.m. on June 11. Osumi allegedly opened fire on two men standing in the 1500 block of Michigan Avenue, shooting both victims multiple times. Santa Monica resident Gil Verastegui, 29, later died. The second victim remains hospitalized. Osumi and Lopez are charged with one count each of murder and attempted murder with gang allegations. The complaint alleges Osumi personally discharged a handgun. Farris is charged with being an accessory. Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Barnes with the Hardcore Gang Division is prosecuting the case. If convicted, Osumi and Lopez face up to life in state prison, and Farris faces up to seven years in state prison.
