A 21-year-old suspect is facing felony charges for allegedly assaulting a transgender woman on May 31 near Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street.
The suspect, Nicol Shakhnazaryan, was arrested on June 20 after police received an anonymous tip that he was involved in the assault. Lt. Marc Reina, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division, said Shakhnazaryan was arrested at an undisclosed location in Van Nuys. Police are still searching for three other men wanted for the assault.
The victim, Vivian Diego, was walking on Hollywood Boulevard at approximately 2:15 a.m. when one of the four suspects approached her and an argument ensued. As the victim walked away, one of the suspects ran up from behind and struck the victim in the back of the head. All four of the suspects then kicked and punched the victim as she lay motionless on the ground. Diego was hospitalized for a week suffering from broken bones and internal injuries, and is still recovering, according to police.
On June 18, authorities released surveillance camera images of the four suspects. After receiving the tip, detectives arrested Shakhnazaryan without incident. Reina said detectives have also learned the names of two of the other three men, and police are actively searching for them. Reina described the men as being friends.
Shakhnazaryan has been charged with battery with serious bodily injury and assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury. Reina said investigators are still determining the motive for the attack.
The LAPD has posted video with images of the wanted suspects at www.lapdonline.org, and an email address has been established for people to provide tips at firstname.lastname@example.org.
