The Los Angeles Police Department is planning numerous DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols over the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.
DUI Checkpoints will be held from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday, May 24 at Figueroa and 9th streets, and Ventura Boulevard and Columbus Avenue.
Additionally, checkpoints will be held on Saturday, May 25 from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. at Highland Avenue and De Longpre Street; at Sherman Way and Independence Avenue; and at San Pedro and Main streets.
Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Officers will also check drivers for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000. In 2011, nearly 10,000 people were killed nationally in vehicle collisions involving drunk drivers. In California, 774 deaths were attributed to drunk drivers in 2011, the latest year for which statistics are available.
The checkpoints are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
