A 31-year-old man who had lived in Los Angeles for less than a year was shot and killed on April 17 as he was walking alone on a street in Koreatown. Investigators have few leads, and are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect.
The victim, Kallen Mahone, was shot at approximately 1:15 a.m. in the 800 block of S. Gramercy Drive, near 8th Street. Witnesses reported hearing numerous gunshots, and officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Olympic Division found Mahone lying near the sidewalk. Paramedics transported him to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives said Mahone was approached by an unknown suspect who pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times. No information was available about the suspect, and no motive has been established.
“As always, you have theories,” said Det. John Shafia, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Bureau Homicide Unit. “There is the robbery theory, the gang theory, the domestic violence theory. Right now, nothing has been ruled out.”
Shafia said Mahone was originally from Kansas. He moved to Koreatown within the last year and resided in an apartment near the location where the shooting occurred. No further information was available.
“He had come down here looking for work,” Shafia added. “There is not much to go on.”
It is unclear whether the murder on April 17 has any connection to an unsolved homicide that occurred a little over a year ago in an apartment building approximately six blocks away. Sam Michel, a 25-year-old man from New York who had moved to Koreatown to pursue a career in web design, was stabbed to death on April 10, 2012, in his apartment at 814 S. Serrano St. Two weeks ago, the victim’s family announced that a reward for information in the case had been doubled, from $50,000 to $100,000. Shafia said no new leads have been generated, but investigators are hoping someone will come forward with information.
Witnesses reported seeing a Hispanic or Caucasian man riding away from Michel’s apartment building on a small BMX-style bicycle. It is unknown whether the man is involved in the crime, but police are hoping to identify and speak with him.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have information about either crime to call (213)382-9470. During weekends and off-hours, call the LAPD’s hotline at (877)LAPD247.
