West Hollywood officials on Friday issued a “strong” warning regarding meningococcal infections after learning that a city resident contracted the disease and was subsequently hospitalized this week. As of Friday, the man was in a coma, Councilman John Duran said.

A meningococcal infection is a bacteria-caused illness that can lead to meningitis, which can be deadly. According to health officials, most of the bacteria that cause meningitis are not as contagious as diseases like the common cold and the flu. Such infections tend to spread more quickly when large groups of people gather together.

Health officials suggested that residents who experience symptoms of the infection, such as nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light or an altered mental status, consult their physicians. If caught early enough, the infection can be treated with antibiotics.

No other cases of the disease have been announced recently in West Hollywood.
