A 23-year-old man was convicted by a jury on July 25 of pointing a green laser beam at law enforcement aircraft in the USC area one year ago.
Floyd Atkins was ordered remanded after the jury verdict. Atkins and co-defendant Alvaro Jimenez, 21, had been free on their own recognizance.
The jury convicted Atkins of one felony count of discharging a laser at an aircraft. Jurors found him not guilty of a second felony count of discharging a laser at an aircraft.
Atkins faces a maximum sentence of three years to be served in county jail. Jimenez, who pleaded no contest to the same felony count earlier this year, faces sentencing on Sept. 7.
The two men were arrested on July 4, 2011, after green laser beams were pointed at Los Angeles Police Department air units. As a result of an earlier incident, air units were able to pinpoint a location for the July 4 laser beam activity.
