On Sunday, hundreds of visitors attended the opening of Levitated Mass, a piece of artwork by Michael Heizer that features a 340-ton granite megalith from Riverside County, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
“The Rock” is placed on top of a 456-slot in LACMA’s Resnick North Lawn that descends 15 feet, allowing patrons to walk underneath the massive boulder.
Sunday’s guests included Heizer, L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LACMA president Michael Govan.
Residents who live in the zip codes along the transport route are granted free museum admission until July 1. However, no admission is required to take in “The Rock”.
