A woman has been arrested after using fraudulent cashier’s checks to purchase items posted on Craigslist by a West Hollywood man, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

On Jan. 8, the West Hollywood resident posted an ad on Craigslist to sell a camera. The suspect, 60-year-old Sheila Watson, allegedly responded to the ad, came to the victim’s home in West Hollywood to purchase the camera and bought it with a $3,700 cashier’s check.

The victim deposited the check and was later told by his bank that the cashier’s check was fraudulent. He then posted a second ad on Craigslist for another camera for sale and was contacted by Watson again, so the victim contacted West Hollywood Station detectives.

On Jan. 13, detectives from the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station conducted a surveillance operation for the grand theft and fraud suspect. A meeting was arranged for Watson to purchase the second camera. She arrived and presented detectives with another fraudulent check to purchase the second camera.

Watson was detained by detectives and subsequently identified by the victim as being the person who purchased the first camera using the fraudulent cashier’s check. Watson was placed under arrest for felony grand theft and booked at West Hollywood Station. She was being held on $10,000 bail, though she is also a person of interest in other similar Craigslist scams.
