A 52-year-old Los Angeles Fire Department captain is scheduled to be arraigned Friday on one count of trying to purchase heroin, the District Attorney’s office said Tuesday.

Matthew Dane Phillipsen was arrested last week after allegedly trying to purchase seven balloons of simulated heroin from undercover Los Angeles Police Department officers during a sting operation being conducted near Avenue 61 and Figueroa Street, authorities said.

Phillipsen was charged with one count of attempted possession of a controlled substance, heroin, a felony. He was released on $10,000 bail. Phillipsen is scheduled to be arraigned at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, Department 30, sometime after 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 18. If convicted, he faces up to three years in county jail.
