Two women, who have been nicknamed the “Mini Mall Bandits” and the “Beauty Salon Bandits” by police because they allegedly stole wallets from baby strollers belonging to people at shopping centers and salons, have been identified.
The thefts have been occurring during the past several weeks in the areas patrolled by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart and Central Divisions. On June 9, detectives received several tips and identified the suspects as Bertha Dona Vargas, 55, of West Covina; and Norma Lizette Reyes, 51, of Los Angeles. Reyes also goes by the name Guadalupe Castro.
Investigators have learned that Reyes allegedly enters a store, beauty salon or mini mall with a partner. Reyes, or her partner, will distract the victim while the other suspect steals the purse or wallet and places it under her dress.
Reyes is wanted for six felony counts of burglary. The value of the property stolen has not been determined, and detectives are asking for help in finding the suspects.
