The incident occurred around 1:20 a.m. outside the bar in the 4500 block of Santa Monica Boulevard. The victim, David Banuelos, of Compton, allegedly got into an argument with the two suspects inside the bar, and all three were ejected by security, according to Lt. Paul Vernon, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Division. When the men went outside, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and fired it into the air. Banuelos allegedly tried to grab the gun from the suspect, who fired again and struck the victim. The suspects then fired into a crowd that had gathered outside the bar, striking a second victim in the leg. Both men then fled in an unknown direction, Vernon said.
Vernon added that before fleeing, the suspects forcibly stole a cell phone from a bystander who had been using it to record a video of the altercation. He said other people may have similar video, which would be helpful in identifying the suspects.
Banuelos was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, and the victim who was shot in the leg was hospitalized and is expected to recover, Vernon said. Both suspects were described as Hispanic men between 25 and 30 years old. The motive for the shooting is unknown.
