While many high school students across Los Angeles were gathering together for graduation celebrations, the Los Angeles Police Department vice units executed the 13th annual Safe and Sober Graduation campaign.
The LAPD anticipated that in the month of June more than 27,000 students will graduate from Los Angeles Unified School District high schools. But as these students celebrate this achievement many will choose to supplement their excitement with alcohol, said Sgt. Fernando Garcia, LAPD Detective Support and Vice Division.
Over the course of the weekend of June 10 to 12, all 21 LAPD vice units were on maximum deployment in participation with the campaign.
This year’s operation employed the use of more than 150 police officers from all 21 vice units located throughout the city, and the cooperation of underage volunteers to conduct shoulder tap and minor decoy operations.
Minor decoy operations involve underage individuals being sent into licensed alcohol distributing locations and attempting to make a purchase on their own.
The decoys visited more than 167 locations resulting in 26 clerks receiving citations that carry a mandatory penalty of $1,000 fine and 24 hours of community service.
In the shoulder tap operations, underage volunteers stood outside of licensed alcohol distributors and approached customers on their way into the store requesting they purchase alcohol for the minor.
In 582 recorded approaches 47 furnished alcohol to minor. These individuals were then detained and issued a citation before being released.
The citation for buying alcohol for a minor carries a fine around $500, but Garcia said many of those will likely undergo alternative prosecution from the city attorney’s office and receive community service hours and be required to take an education class.
Last year, more than 364 licensed alcohol locations resulting in 50 clerk citations. The LAPD conducted more than 344 shoulder tap solicitations and issued 40 violations.
