Prosecutors added new capital murder charges Wednesday against one of the three defendants charged in a murder and robbery spree in April and May that left two men dead, including MTV music coordinator Gabriel Ben-Meir, who was killed on May 8 while walking to his apartment just south of the Miracle Mile.
Jabaar Vincent Thomas, 26, was charged with murdering Ben-Meir and Marcelo Aragon, who was killed during a robbery on April 30 in the Pico-Union District. The charges against Thomas include the special circumstances of murder for robbery and multiple murders, making him eligible for the death penalty.
Ben-Meir, 30, was killed after parking his car near his apartment on Packard Street, between Spaulding and Stanley Avenues. Both Ben-Meir and Aragon were shot with a shotgun during a robbery, according to police.
Deputy District Attorney Robert Serna, with the Hardcore Gang Division, filed the new charges against Thomas, who is one of three defendants already charged in connection with the murders and robberies. He is now charged with seven counts of second-degree robbery and one count of being a felon in possession of a handgun. The robbery charges include allegations that the crimes were gang-related, and that Thomas personally and intentionally discharged a firearm.
Prosecutors also filed an additional robbery count against Destiny Young, 29, who was charged earlier with capital murder and six counts of second-degree robbery. No new charges were filed against the third defendant, Richard Edward Anderson, 33, who is facing six counts of second degree robbery.
All three defendants pleaded not guilty on June 15 to the amended charges and will return to court on July 13 to set a date for their preliminary hearing. Although Young and Thomas could face the death penalty, the decision will be made later whether to seek death or life without parole, according to Jane Robison, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Thomas, Young and Anderson were allegedly involved in a series of robberies and murders in the Olympic, Wilshire, and Koreatown area between April 27 and May 11, including multiple robberies that occurred overnight between May 10 and 11. Personnel from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Olympic, Wilshire and Southeast Divisions went on tactical alert that night in an effort to catch the suspects. A patrol officer from the Wilshire Division recognized the suspects from witness descriptions, and Young and Thomas were arrested on May 11 in the 4000 block of Washington Boulevard. A shotgun was recovered during the arrests. Through questioning, investigators determined Anderson was also involved, and he was taken into custody later that day at a residence in South Los Angeles.
Thomas and Young are being held without bail, while Anderson remains in custody on $725,000 bail.
