Two suspects were booked for felony assault with a deadly weapon after one of the men allegedly critically injured a victim during a fight outside the Whisky a Go Go nightclub Monday night, and then jumped into a vehicle with a second suspect who struck two pedestrians while trying to flee.
The incident also resulted in a deputy-involved shooting that occurred as authorities pulled the suspects over a few blocks away, and one of them allegedly pointed a dark object at deputies. One shot was fired and the bullet struck the suspects’ driver door. Neither suspect was injured, and both were then taken into custody without further incident, according to Lt. Lawrence Del Mese, with the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station.
The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. when one of the suspects, identified as Jesus Gomez, 18, became involved in an altercation with an unidentified victim inside the venue. The suspect and victim exited the club and a fight ensued. Del Mese said several other male suspects also became involved in the fight, and Gomez allegedly kicked the victim multiple times until he was unconscious.
Gomez then attempted to flee in an SUV driven by Eduardo Gomez, 20, who struck the first pedestrian as he drove out of the parking lot onto Clark Street. The pair then headed westbound on Sunset Boulevard and struck a second pedestrian, who only sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene and released. Del Mese said the suspects are related, but he did not know if they are brothers.
Deputies who were responding to a call about the fight chased the suspects until they pulled over on Doheny Drive just north of Sunset Boulevard, where the deputy-involved shooting occurred. The sheriff’s department will be conducting an investigation into the shooting, as is standard procedure anytime a deputy fires their gun.
An employee at the Whisky a Go Go who answered the phone Tuesday but declined to give his name, said the venue had been booked Monday night by M Productions, an independent promotion company. Several punk rock bands were on the bill, including Cold Blue Rebels, Feedbach, One-Eyed Doll, Famous Psychos, The Bricks and the Straight Jacked Psychos.
Del Mese said both the sheriff’s department and West Hollywood city officials will review the incident in the next couple of weeks to determine if anything could have been done to prevent the incident, and whether any actions should be taken against the club for violations. He said the Whisky a Go Go is not a problematic location, and a review after incidents involving violence is standard procedure.
Both Jesus and Eduardo Gomez are being held in custody and are facing felony assault with a deadly weapon charges. Eduardo Gomez was also booked for felony drunk driving involving injuries. Both of the victims remained in critical condition Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Del Mese added.
