A 22-year-old Los Angeles resident was shot and killed, and another victim was struck in the hand by gunfire, at a party at a recording studio on North La Brea Ave. on April 17.
The shooting occurred around 3:10 a.m. at the Black Hole Productions studio at 1645 N. La Brea Ave., just south of Hollywood Blvd. Lt. Michael Oreb, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division, said a large crowd was attending the party in the studio, located on the second level of a former residence that has been converted into businesses. Oreb said between 50 and 70 people were in close quarters inside the recording studio when an altercation erupted between the victim and the suspect, who pulled out a handgun and began shooting.
“People exited the place rapidly, to say the least,” Oreb said. “When officers arrived, they found the victim on the floor suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.”
The victim was identified as Lorenzo Smith, of South Los Angeles. The wounded victim, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital, treated and released.
Oreb said the incident is believed to be gang related. The suspect, who was accompanied by several other men at the party, fled on foot in an unknown direction. He is described as an African American man between 20 to 25 years old, approximately six-feet-two-inches tall and 190 pounds. He had tattoos on the left side of his neck and on his left arm.
Oreb said the shooting was unusual for the area, which has a lot of businesses that are generally closed at night.
“We don’t have too many violent parties like this in that area,” Oreb added. “We are using all of the resources available to identify this suspect and apprehend him.”
