Huge homes on small lots in the City of Los Angeles will no longer be allowed. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (center), joined Councilmembers Ed Reyes (left), 1st District, and Tom LaBonge, 4th District, during the signing of the Baseline Hillside Ordinance, also known as the Hillside Mansionization Ordinance, on Wednesday.
The ordinance, introduced by LaBonge in June 2006, establishes new regulations for all single-family, residentially zoned properties to prevent out-of-scale development with the property lot-size and the surrounding neighborhood.
“The Baseline Hillside Ordinance is a long overdue step in halting the ‘mansionization’ of our hillside and canyon neighborhoods,” LaBonge said. “These new limits and regulations make sure architects design to the contour of the land, and don’t over-power the landscape and the neighborhood with a home that’s too big for its lot.”
A Baseline Mansionization Ordinance for the rest of Los Angeles was adopted in 2008.
