“Spring Awakening”, the 2007 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, opened Tuesday night at the Pantages for eight performances only through Sunday. The play is set in late 19th Century Germany, juxtaposing repressed teens who use modern-day rock to express their frustrations, anxieties, and burgeoning sexuality. Outstanding performances in singing and acting are turned in by the entire cast, especially the lead roles played by Christopher Wood as Melchior and Elizabeth Judd as Wendla. Supporting roles by Cody Getzug as Moritz and Courtney Markowitz as Ilse are equally good. With provocative and sexually explicit scenes, the play is intended for mature audiences.
