A Los Angeles city firefighter died Friday from injuries he suffered while battling a house fire in the Hollywood Hills that erupted last Wednesday night.
Glenn Allen, 61, died around 12:15 p.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he and five other injured firefighters were treated following a partial ceiling collapse during the fire at 1546 N. Viewsite Dr. Allen, a 36-year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department, was reported to be one-year away from retirement. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Friday ordered all flags at city buildings lowered to half-staff.
“I join all Angelenos in mourning the loss of firefighter Glenn Allen, a fearlessly committed firefighter who dedicated thirty-six years of his life to protecting the people of Los Angeles,” Villaraigosa said. “Glenn was a valiant hero whose selfless sacrifice will forever be honored. This tragedy serves as a somber, yet powerful reminder that the brave men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department put their lives on the line each and every day to keep us safe from harm.”
The fire was reported around 11:20 p.m. on Feb. 16. Allen was part of a crew that had entered the home just prior to the ceiling collapse, and he was pinned under the debris. Crews had to use chainsaws to extricate Allen, and by the time he was freed, Allen reportedly was not breathing and had to be resuscitated. Allen was the most seriously injured firefighter. One other firefighter suffered a broken ankle, while the other injuries were reported to be minor.
An investigation is continuing, but officials believe the ceiling was weakened when a plastic pipe that was part of the fire sprinkler system melted and began leaking in a crawlspace above the ceiling. Officials believe the blaze initially spread from a fireplace inside the house, but the exact cause has not been determined. The occupants of the residence evacuated before the fire spread, and were not injured.
Allen was stationed at Fire Station 97, located at 8021 Mulholland Dr. He was part of a contingent of L.A. City and L.A. County firefighters who were battling the blaze, which was extinguished in approximately 90 minutes. Funeral services for Allen are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 25 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels.

This is truly a tragedy and I am sorry to learn that we lost one of our best and longest serving firemen. Glenn Allen served his community for many years with honor and distinction, and he will be missed. It’s even more upsetting to learn he was only a year away from retirement. I wish the best for his family and appreciate his ultimate sacrifice.
