A Los Angeles city firefighter is fighting for his life at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after being pinned under debris when a ceiling collapsed during a blaze at a home in the Hollywood Hills Wednesday night.
The firefighter was one of five personnel who were injured during the fire at the home in the 1500 block of North Viewsite Dr. LAFD officials have reported that the ceiling may have been weakened by a broken sprinkler system that was leaking water.
Crews had to use chainsaws to extricate the firefighter, who was buried under debris and had to be resuscitated. The other firefighters suffered minor injuries and were reported to be in good condition. The group was part of a contingent of L.A. City and L.A. County firefighters who were battling the blaze, which was reported around 11 p.m. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in approximately 90 minutes. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but it is reported to have possibly started by flames that spread from a fireplace.
