A 42-year-old east Hollywood resident has been charged with murdering his brother following a stabbing that occurred in an apartment in the 1500 block of Winona Boulevard on Oct. 10.
The suspect, Edgar Pelayo, was arrested as he attempted to flee to the Mexican border after the stabbing. Investigators who responded to the scene of the stabbing learned that the suspect had boarded a Greyhound bus bound for Calexico. Officials determined the route the bus was taking, and Pelayo was taken into custody around 12:40 a.m. on Oct. 11 when the bus made a regular stop in San Bernardino.
According to Lt. Robert Binder, with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division, Pelayo allegedly stabbed his 31-year-old brother, Phillip Pelayo, during a fight in the apartment. The victim staggered out to a driveway and collapsed, and other residents of the complex called 911. When officers arrived, paramedics had already taken Phillip Pelayo to the hospital. He was pronounced dead at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.
Binder said an unidentified man at the apartment complex had chased the older Pelayo for a short time before returning to the scene and speaking with investigators. Binder said detectives learned through interviews that Edgar Pelayo was the person who stabbed his brother, and that he may be headed for Mexico. No motive has been established, Binder said.
“There were only two people in the apartment at the time of the fight, and one is dead,” Binder added. “Obviously there was some type of argument that ended up with one brother stabbing the other. It was a family dispute that turned violent.”
Edgar Pelayo has been charged with murder and is being held on $1 million bail.
