The home at 553 S. Windsor Ave. is reportedly owned by Dr. Arnie Klein, a former dermatologist for the late pop icon, Michael Jackson. Fire department officials declined to say whether Klein was one of the four people evacuated from the house after the blaze erupted around 6:45 a.m.
According to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey, the fire started in the kitchen, located towards the rear of the three-story home, and the cause has been ruled as accidental. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find smoke billowing from the residence. Firefighters entered the front door of the 11,000-square-foot home, where they found a 74-year-old woman attempting to escape, who they escorted outside. Additional firefighters searched the rear of the structure and found three male victims, one of whom was in a wheelchair, stranded on a second-floor balcony. Firefighters working from the interior evacuated the three men safely down a staircase. Fifty firefighters extinguished the flames in approximately 40 minutes.
Two of the men who were evacuated were treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization, according to Humphrey. The 65-year-old man in the wheelchair and the female victim were transported to the hospital, treated for minor smoke inhalation and released. No other injuries were reported, and the identities of the victims were not released.
The fire caused approximately $150,000 in damage to the residence, and $50,000 in damage to its contents.
