A 43-year-old Australian man was arrested Thursday and charged with vehicular manslaughter in the hit and run death of a 21-year-old woman who was killed Wednesday night while crossing Sunset Boulevard.
Ryan Bowman surrendered to authorities at the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station at 4:30 p.m., according to Capt. Ray Leyva, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He was accompanied by his attorney, who had contacted officials at the station to arrange the surrender. Leyva said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision.
Bowman is accused of hitting Lauren Ann Freeman as she was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Hammond Street around 11:50 p.m. Bowman, who was driving a 2007 Bentley, allegedly abandoned the vehicle near La Cienega Boulevard and Melrose Avenue. Debris found at the crash site matched the Bentley, which also had a broken windshield. Leyva said he had no information about Bowman, other than he is an Australian national. Leyva added that Bowman was still in custody Thursday evening. He was being held on $100,000 bail.

Something needs to be done to prevent tragedies like this from ever happening again. With all the bars in West Hollywood,I think the police should train their eyes on those people leaving bars and entering their cars. That’s the time to check drivers by giving them a breathalyzer test.If they don’t pass, arrest them for DUI.Don’t give them the chance of driving drunk and possibly killing someone.
