A 45-year-old man is in critical condition after being pinned between a westbound subway train and the platform at the Hollywood and Vine Red Line Station Tuesday morning.
Los Angeles Fire Department officials received a call at 7:18 a.m. about a man trapped by a train at the station, according to fire department spokesperson Devin Gales. Firefighters arrived and found the victim pinned in a gap between one of the train cars and the platform. Approximately 33 firefighters, including members of a heavy rescue unit, extricated the victim in approximately 15 to 20 minutes, Gales said. The victim was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but Gales could not confirm the extent of his injuries other than to say they were critical.
Luis Inzunza, a public information officer for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), said it is unknown whether the man jumped in front of the train or fell off the platform as the train was approaching. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating, and Tom Martin, a media advisor for the sheriff’s department, said officials would be examining surveillance camera footage to determine the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Inzunza said trains passing through the station were diverted to a single track during the rescue, and were delayed approximately 20 minutes between the Santa Monica and Vermont Station and the Universal City Station. Service resumed by 9 a.m., according to Inzunza, who described such incidents as being “very rare.”
